Rosacea
What is rosacea?
Rosacea (pronounced ‘rose ay shah’) is a very common red rash on the nose and cheeks (butterfly area of the face), and sometimes on the forehead and chin. Many sufferers will flush and blush easily. We do not know what causes rosacea.
Who gets rosacea?
Fair skinned adults and occasionally those with dark skin. Although rosacea can occur at any age, it is more common in middle-aged women.
How does rosacea develop?
Usually the first sign is a persistent redness that looks like a blush or sunburn. This is caused by enlarged blood vessels under the skin called telangiectasia (‘tel an jec taz ya’). The redness gradually becomes permanent and more noticeable. Pimples may also develop.
What are the triggers for rosacea?
Anything that makes you hot or flush; examples are sudden changes in temperature (eg going from a cold to a hot room, a hot drink, sauna, hot bath), exposure to sunlight, spicy foods, alcohol, and excessive use of some cosmetics and toiletries that irritate the skin.
How embarrassing is rosacea?
Extremely, as it appears on the face. In men, the sebaceous glands can enlarge causing a prominent nose (rhinophyma), but this is not linked to drinking too much alcohol.
What are the popular myths about rosacea?
Rosacea is not caused by alcohol, stress, and embarrassing situations; though these can make it worse. Rosacea is not the same as acne.
What can we do to minimise the effects of rosacea?
Because UV radiation from the sun damages the skin and its vascular system, it is wise to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. Always use an oil-free sunscreen when outdoors.
How does Cetaphil® fit into all of this?
I always advise women to use Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser for removing their make-up and to wash their face. Men too, can use Cetaphil® as a face wash instead of soap. We need to treat the skin gently and we use Cetaphil® because it is gentle on the skin. Cetaphil® Moisturising Lotion is a very light moisturiser to hydrate the skin and doesn’t clog up the sebaceous glands.
Why do you recommend Cetaphil®?
My own personal experience is that it is the least irritating of the cleansers and moisturisers available. It is my favourite soap free wash and cleanser to remove make-up, and has been for years.
What do people like about Cetaphil®?
People like Cetaphil® because it is pleasant, acceptable, easy to use, non-irritating, non-oily and feels cool on the skin. It can also be used without water if needed.
When should I see my GP or a dermatologist?
There are effective medications that may clear rosacea in 3-6 months. These are prescribed by your doctor. The earlier we treat the rosacea the better, and the good news is that most people can have their rosacea improved or cleared. See your doctor if you are bothered by your red face.
