Sun & ageing
Is the sun or ageing more damaging to our skin?
Most skin changes such as wrinkles, mottled brown discolouration , scaly sun spots and skin cancers are caused by long term sun exposure. These changes are called photoageing, and this is what we complain about most from a cosmetic point of view. Where our skin has not been as exposed to the sun these changes are seen far less often. Even in areas where we do not have sun exposure the skin does change as we age. With time, the layers of our skin become thinner. Changes such as a decrease in the elastin and collagen can result in wrinkling and easy bruising. Our skin also becomes drier due to a decrease in the oil gland or sebaceous activity. When the skin becomes dry, it can easily become itchy, red and scaly. Interestingly, underlying illnesses and medications used to treat them can intensify these ageing changes.
What can we do to slow down this process?
- Protect yourself from the sun with clothing and sunscreen.
- Avoid soaps and irritants that can dry the skin.
- Use an appropriate moisturiser.
How can we take care of our sun damaged skin?
Regular moisturisers (such as Cetaphil) can help correct dryness, irritation, and itchiness. Sometimes you need to consult your local doctor if your skin changes are very prominent as this may represent underlying medical problems. Fruit acid or retinoid creams can also be useful in photoageing. Other procedures such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing are sometimes performed where simple treatments are ineffective. These latter treatments are more long lasting but have side effects such as discomfort and possible scarring.
How suitable is Cetaphil®?
The advantage of Cetaphil® products is that they are well tolerated. They are usually suitable for both young patients , where other products result in clogging of the pores and acne, and in older patients , where other moisturisers are irritating and cause rashes. Because the cleanser, lotion and cream do not contain perfume, they are less likely to irritate the skin. Even natural perfumes such as essential oils found in other moisturisers can cause rashes.
How helpful is Cetaphil® for ageing and sun damaged skin?
Cetaphil® is a very good non-soap cleanser because it is gentle and does not irritate the skin. The moisturiser is ideal for many people with dry skin, mild dermatitis or psoriasis, as it hydrates the skin without leaving a thick greasy feeling. Used often, it can minimise the need for prescription medications.
Is there a simple maxim to follow?
Avoid soap, use sunscreen in the morning, and moisturise with Cetaphil® at night and after bathing.
What do people like about Cetaphil®?
They like how the moisturiser spreads easily, how it helps with the dryness, and their skin does not feel clogged after they use it. They also like the availability and convenience of the cleanser in the large blue bottles. Cetaphil® is very cost effective. Women like Cetaphil® because it can be used to remove make-up quite easily. Men like to use Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser as a shaving lotion. The cleanser can also be used as a conditioner for people with dry scalps.
When should I see my GP or a dermatologist?
If you are very concerned about the appearance of your skin, or have a rash, irritation, or persistent red, scaly or tender spot that is not settling after a few weeks with a topical prescription cream.
